WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF VENOUS DISEASE?

Before we dive into the different types of venous disease, it is probably best to understand the basic functions of veins in our body. Our veins function to carry de-oxygenated blood from our organs and tissues to the right-side of the heart, from which blood is shunted towards the lungs to be oxygenated. To help defy gravity and promote blood flow from the lower limbs, our veins have semi-lunar valves which prevent reflux (backflow) of blood. Most venous disease occurs because of two reasons – either a reflux (backward flow) of blood, or an obstruction of the vein itself. Most of the patients we see and treat at FSA Vein  have one of the following types of venous disease:

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?

Varicose veins are tortuous and widened veins which tend to be prominent in the lower limbs and are easily visible. Because of their negative cosmetic effect, they tend to cause great distress to our patients, especially in those who lead active lifestyles. Even though they are often neglected as a medically “unimportant” condition and are often not prioritized, they affect a staggering one-third of adults in general and cause great concern in those affected by them.

Although varicose veins are slightly more common in men than in women, we see more women who present for treatment at FSA Vein. Some of our patients develop these in their teenage years, although most women tend to develop them in adult life. A family history of varicose veins is common, but patients who have relatives with severe venous problems such as venous ulcers should not be too worried – their own likelihood of developing these complications is not significantly increased by positive family history.

VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT & RISK FACTORS

For many individuals, varicose veins are a cosmetic concern. For others, the condition can cause significant pain and discomfort, especially after standing or sitting for long periods of time. For individuals with severe varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and spontaneous bleeding can cause serious concern. Wounds and ulcers can also form at the site of varicose veins.
Here’s what you should know about risk factors and treatment for this condition
