VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT & RISK FACTORS

For many individuals, varicose veins are a cosmetic concern. For others, the condition can cause significant pain and discomfort, especially after standing or sitting for long periods of time. For individuals with severe varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and spontaneous bleeding can cause serious concern. Wounds and ulcers can also form at the site of varicose veins.
Here’s what you should know about risk factors and treatment for this condition

RISK FACTORS FOR VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins can happen to men and women of all ages. However, there are some key risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing them:
  • Sex: Women are more likely than men to develop varicose veins. In fact, 60% of people suffering from varicose veins are women. This can be attributed to multiple factors. For starters, the volume of blood in the body increases significantly during pregnancy. This extra blood volume can cause an expansion in the veins, especially in the legs. Additionally, hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life can contribute to weakened vein walls.
  • Age: As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass. This compromises the body’s support system for veins and attached structures. Weakened veins can collect blood instead of circulating it back into the body. This can lead to expansion and bulging of surface veins in the legs. Additionally, many seniors have mobility and energy issues that contribute to an increased sedentary lifestyle. This lack of activity can cause weakened blood flow.
  • Obesity: Excess weight has been shown to put pressure on the veins, weakening the vein walls over time. This can contribute to pooling blood and lack of circulation.
  • Genetics: Individuals whose parents suffer from varicose veins are more likely to develop the condition.

Individuals who regularly sit or stand for long periods of time are also more likely to develop varicose veins. Lack of physical activity contributes to decreased blood flow and increased likelihood of blood pooling in the leg veins.

TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS

Many individuals live for decades with embarrassing and painful varicose veins, assuming that treatments are painful or ineffective. Fortunately, vein treatments have come a long way in the past few years. Today, varicose veins treatment exists to treat both the appearance and the pain associated with varicose veins.
