What are Varicose Veins?Varicose veins are tortuous and widened veins which tend to be prominent in the lower limbs and are easily visible. Because of their negative cosmetic effect, they tend to cause great distress to our patients, especially in those who lead active lifestyles. Even though they are often neglected as a medically “unimportant” condition and are often not prioritized, they affect a staggering one-third of adults in general and cause great concern in those affected by them. Although varicose veins are slightly more common in men than in women, we see more women who present for treatment at FSA Vein. Some of our patients develop these in their teenage years, although most women tend to develop them in adult life. A family history of varicose veins is common, but patients who have relatives with severe venous problems such as venous ulcers should not be too worried – their own likelihood of developing these complications is not significantly increased by positive family history. What are the signs and symptoms of Varicose Veins?Apart from the cosmetic effects of varicose veins, patients tend to present with organic symptoms as well. These include discomfort in the form of itching, heaviness, and aching. These distressing symptoms typically worsen throughout the day and positively correlate with prolonged standing or walking. Patients typically report momentary relief of these symptoms by elevating the legs or wearing compression stockings. Occasionally, varicose veins can become complicated by bleeding and overlying skin changes that resemble eczema. Rarely, there can be a brownish discoloration of the overlying skin which becomes inflamed and indurated – a condition known as lipodermatosclerosis which is troublesome and may even lead to ulcerations. Not to worry however, Dr. Yalamanchili is able to astutely classify and prognosticate your varicose veins and exclude these complications during your first visit with us at FSA Vein. Should you have these complications, we will draw up an appropriate and effective treatment plan for you. Best therapeutic options for Varicose Veins?Although most varicose veins are unlikely to cause harm in the long run, most of our patients opt for treatment in order to achieve normal-looking skin. This is facilitated through interventional procedures such as ligation of the vein through conventional surgery, or less invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy, radiofrequency or laser ablation. Dr. Yalamanchili is well-trained and adept in these procedures and will be happy to discuss the benefits, risks and therapeutic potential of these strategies with you. Patient education is a big part of what we do at FSA Vein and we take immense pride in involving our patients in their care decisions. One of the benefits of having a physician like Dr. Yalamanchili is that he is up-to-date and abreast with the scientific literature underpinning these treatment strategies – our patients love his simple explanations where he unravels complex data into easily comprehensible processes.
