What are Venous Ulcers?Venous leg ulcers are open sores that typically occur on the background of generalized venous disease. They tend to occur in the area between the knee and ankle joints and are single handedly the most common cause of leg ulcers – indeed, up to 80% of all leg ulcers are caused by venous leg ulcers. These ulcers tend to persist for more than 6 weeks and can be extremely troublesome and worrisome for patients who have them. Thankfully, Dr Yalamanchili has over a decade of experience in managing these troublesome ulcers. How do Venous Ulcers develop? Many of our patients that we see at FSA Vein Care are often times confused and perplexed as to why they developed a venous ulcer. There are many causes of venous leg ulcers, but the most common cause is that of general venous disease or insufficiency. The pressure in the veins of the lower limbs is elevated due to insufficiencies in the valves within the veins which normally function to prevent reflux (backflow) of blood against gravity. Another cause of venous ulcers is that of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can occur in patients who are prone to clotting due to inherited blood disorders, or in those who have the risk factors for it, such as obesity, major trauma or prolonged long-distance travel. How will my Venous Ulcer be evaluated? At FSA Vein Care, we believe in holistic patient care. Hence, Dr Yalamanchili takes a comprehensive approach to all his patients and does not treat their problems in isolation. Even if your primary concern is that of your venous leg ulcer, Dr Yalamanchili will perform a targeted clinical assessment for you. This comprises of a review of your medical history, including a stratified risk assessment for your cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk. This is important, as arterial leg ulcers can rarely mimic venous ulcers and may herald widespread systemic arterial disease (atherosclerosis). Next, you will be physically examined – specifically, your pulses and blood pressure will be assessed. The ulcer will be carefully evaluated for its location, size, characteristics and signs of infection. This will enable us to classify your venous ulcer and recommend the appropriate treatment strategy that is tailored and customized to your needs. What can I expect for Venous Ulcer treatment?Depending on the classification and severity of your venous ulcer, Dr Yalamanchili will order some specialized investigations such as a Doppler ultrasound or Duplex ultrasound to objectively evaluate the blood flow through your veins and/or arteries. Blood tests such as your serum lipids (fats) and antibodies may also be ordered depending on your medical history and presentation. Every single investigation that is ordered will be explained simply, but in detail to you so that you are able to participate wholly in your own care plan. The mainstay of treatment in venous leg ulcers is that of compression therapy, leg elevation and drug therapy with pentoxifylline and daflon, although more specialized treatments are available for select patients.
What are Varicose Veins?Varicose veins are tortuous and widened veins which tend to be prominent in the lower limbs and are easily visible. Because of their negative cosmetic effect, they tend to cause great distress to our patients, especially in those who lead active lifestyles. Even though they are often neglected as a medically “unimportant” condition and are often not prioritized, they affect a staggering one-third of adults in general and cause great concern in those affected by them. Although varicose veins are slightly more common in men than in women, we see more women who present for treatment at FSA Vein. Some of our patients develop these in their teenage years, although most women tend to develop them in adult life. A family history of varicose veins is common, but patients who have relatives with severe venous problems such as venous ulcers should not be too worried – their own likelihood of developing these complications is not significantly increased by positive family history. What are the signs and symptoms of Varicose Veins?Apart from the cosmetic effects of varicose veins, patients tend to present with organic symptoms as well. These include discomfort in the form of itching, heaviness, and aching. These distressing symptoms typically worsen throughout the day and positively correlate with prolonged standing or walking. Patients typically report momentary relief of these symptoms by elevating the legs or wearing compression stockings. Occasionally, varicose veins can become complicated by bleeding and overlying skin changes that resemble eczema. Rarely, there can be a brownish discoloration of the overlying skin which becomes inflamed and indurated – a condition known as lipodermatosclerosis which is troublesome and may even lead to ulcerations. Not to worry however, Dr. Yalamanchili is able to astutely classify and prognosticate your varicose veins and exclude these complications during your first visit with us at FSA Vein. Should you have these complications, we will draw up an appropriate and effective treatment plan for you. Best therapeutic options for Varicose Veins?Although most varicose veins are unlikely to cause harm in the long run, most of our patients opt for treatment in order to achieve normal-looking skin. This is facilitated through interventional procedures such as ligation of the vein through conventional surgery, or less invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy, radiofrequency or laser ablation. Dr. Yalamanchili is well-trained and adept in these procedures and will be happy to discuss the benefits, risks and therapeutic potential of these strategies with you. Patient education is a big part of what we do at FSA Vein and we take immense pride in involving our patients in their care decisions. One of the benefits of having a physician like Dr. Yalamanchili is that he is up-to-date and abreast with the scientific literature underpinning these treatment strategies – our patients love his simple explanations where he unravels complex data into easily comprehensible processes. COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT VARICOSE VEINSVaricose veins have turned into a common disease amongst a lot of adults in modern society. According to a study, more than 20% of adults experience this disorder at some point. Though varicose veins are relatively common, still, there are many misconceptions about its conditions and treatment options. If you have recently been diagnosed with varicose veins, perhaps you’re trying to sort out facts from fictions. To help you learn the truth, we have put together a few prevalent myths about varicose veins. So, let’s get to know about them. 1. Varicose veins are only cosmeticSometimes, primary care doctors tell people that varicose veins are just a cosmetic issue. Undoubtedly, there is a cosmetic element to varicose veins, but they are much more than that. In most cases, they arise on your legs and can make it difficult for you to wear shorts or skirts. If not treated on time, varicose veins can have a huge impact on your overall health. Over a period of time, they may:
Remember, untreated varicose veins can be dangerous because the blood that is pooling in veins can clot. This condition is called superficial phlebitis and is quite painful. Sometimes, even the first stage of varicose veins can become more serious known as chronic venous disease, often marked as strong skin discoloration. 2. Nothing can be done to cure varicose veinsThere are some people who will tell you that there is no way to prevent varicose veins. However, the fact is, some people can prevent the onset of varicose veins by making changes to lifestyle and diet. Patients who are in the 1st stage may take the following preventative measures:
Apart from lifestyle changes, you can go minimally invasive non-surgical options depending on your situation. If home-based treatments are not working for you, your doctor may prescribe you following treatments: Laser surgery In this treatment, an intense burst of lights is thrown onto the affected vein, making it disappear gradually. Endothermal Ablation: This procedure involves the use of heat to seal the affected veins. Sclerotherapy: This is where your surgeon will use a certain foam to close the veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy: This procedure includes the puncturing of the skin and removing affected veins making small cuts on the skin. The patient may notice minimal scarring after the surgery. Endoscopic Vein Surgery: In this surgery, a small camera is placed into the leg to help the doctor to see varicose veins. Removal of the veins is done via a series of small incisions. 3. Varicose vein treatment is painfulModern varicose vein treatments are pretty easy. They are done at doctors’ office under local anesthesia, usually in an hour with no to mild discomfort. Laser or radiofrequency saphenous ablation treatment is performed under ultrasound guidance helping the surgeon to see inside the skin. The laser treatment involves the closing of the affected vein that allows the body to automatically re-route the blood to other healthy veins. 4. Varicose veins are strictly a women’s issueIt is true that women are more likely to have varicose veins, but saying it is strictly a women’s issue would be wrong. According to a study, around 45% of all men experience varicose veins once in their lives. However, the primary cause of varicose veins in both men and women is a family history. If someone close in your family has varicose veins, you’re more likely to have them. In addition to this, your lifestyle also plays a big role too. If your job requires you to stand for a long period such as restaurant occupations, sales, factory works, etc., you have more chance to have varicose veins. Even if you sit at a desk for several hours at a time, you’re at the risk as well. An old leg trauma can be cause for this condition. Though varicose veins can strike men of all ages, the risk is more for older men because of the loss of muscle mass and tissue tone, as well as weakening of the venous walls. 5. Running can cause varicose veinsRegular exercise can lower your chance of developing varicose veins. And running is one of those exercises that is considered good for blood circulation in the body. Running improves circulation of blood in the legs and lowers the blood pressure too - that simply means being a runner doesn’t cause varicose veins. However, people suffering from varicose veins are advised not to run if there is a swelling in legs. In case you have leg swelling, you can replace running with ankle exercise. Along with running, you can also do some other low-impact exercises to ease your varicose veins such as swimming, walking, cycling, etc. Final ThoughtsThere are a lot of myths about varicose veins apart from these five. If you are experiencing any of signs of varicose veins, see your doctors immediately instead of taking advice from friends or the internet. Based on your particular condition, your doctor may prescribe you the best treatment. Since there are many misconceptions about the treatment procedures too, look for a reputed and qualified doctor only. Contact Us TodayAre you looking for vein treatment or a vein doctor near you?
